21 Days of Reiki: An Invitation to Reconnect With Your Practice

Updated: 6 days ago

Receiving a Reiki attunement can feel like a beginning. You learn the foundations of Reiki, receive your attunement, practice the hand positions, and begin experiencing Reiki through your own hands.

But the relationship with Reiki develops through practice.

Traditionally, Reiki students are encouraged to spend the 21 days following an attunement practicing self-Reiki. I think of this less as something you have to complete and more as an invitation: 21 days to receive, notice, practice, and begin trusting your own experience of Reiki.

And this practice isn't only for new students.

A 21-day self-Reiki practice can also be a beautiful way to reaffirm your connection with Reiki after a long period away, reconnect with daily self-treatment, or integrate a recent reattunement.

You don't need to start over.

You simply begin again.

Why 21 Days?

The tradition of a 21-day Reiki practice is often connected to Mikao Usui's period of meditation and fasting on Mount Kurama and has become a common integration practice within many Reiki lineages.

Today, many Reiki practitioners use the 21 days following an attunement as dedicated time for self-Reiki and reflection.

Your experience during those 21 days is uniquely your own.

You may notice warmth, tingling, pulsing, or other sensations while practicing. You may become more aware of emotions, thoughts, or places where you're holding tension. You may feel peaceful, energized, tired, introspective, or deeply grounded.

Or you may not notice much at all.

There is no particular sensation or experience you need to have for Reiki to be meaningful.

Rather than looking for something dramatic to happen, I encourage my students to approach these 21 days with curiosity.

What do I notice today?

Returning to Reiki After Time Away

One of the things I love about Reiki is that the practice is always available to return to.

Maybe you completed your Reiki training years ago and practiced regularly for a while, but life became busy.

Maybe you stopped practicing because you weren't sure whether you were "doing it right."

Or perhaps you've simply felt a pull toward Reiki again.

You don't need to judge the time you've spent away from your practice.

You can place your hands on your body today and begin.

Some practitioners also choose to receive a reattunement as a way of reconnecting with their Reiki practice. A 21-day self-Reiki practice afterward can provide intentional space to explore that renewed connection.

Whether you're integrating your first attunement, returning after months or years away, or reconnecting after a reattunement, the intention can be the same:

Practice. Receive. Listen. Trust.

Days 1–7: Receive

For the first week, focus simply on receiving.

Give yourself Reiki without trying to analyze what's happening or wondering whether you're feeling enough.

Become familiar with placing your hands on your own body and allowing yourself to be on the receiving end of the practice.

Notice warmth, coolness, tingling, heaviness, relaxation, emotion, or stillness. And if you don't notice any particular sensation, that's okay too.

Ask yourself:

What do I notice when I allow myself to receive?

Days 8–14: Listen

During the second week, deepen your awareness.

Notice where your hands naturally want to rest. Pay attention to your breath, your body, your emotions, and anything that becomes more noticeable when you become still.

This isn't about interpreting every sensation or deciding what it means.

It's an opportunity to listen.

Ask yourself:

What is asking for my attention today?

Days 15–21: Trust

During the final week, allow your practice to become a little more intuitive.

You may still use the traditional self-Reiki hand positions, or you may notice that your hands naturally want to stay somewhere longer.

Begin trusting your own experience rather than looking outside yourself for confirmation that you're practicing correctly.

Ask yourself:

What am I learning about the way I experience Reiki?

Creating a Daily Self-Reiki Practice

I encourage approximately 20–30 minutes of self-Reiki each day, but your practice doesn't need to be perfect.

Some days you may have time for a full practice. Other days, ten quiet minutes with your hands resting over your heart and belly may be what is available to you.

Consistency matters more than perfection.

Create a comfortable space, take a few slow breaths, and set a simple intention before beginning. Move through your self-Reiki hand positions or allow your hands to rest where you feel drawn.

When you're finished, take a moment before immediately moving into the rest of your day.

Notice.

How does your body feel?

What emotions are present?

Has anything shifted?

What are you grateful for today?

These are the kinds of observations I included in my 21-Day Reiki Integration Journal, with a page for each day to record the length of your practice, how you're feeling, physical, spiritual or emotional observations, and gratitude.

At the end of the 21 days, the journal also creates space to look back at your experience and notice whether anything has changed in how you feel or in your confidence working with Reiki.

Your Practice Is Still Here

If you've stepped away from Reiki, you haven't failed at the practice.

Sometimes our practices are central to our lives. Sometimes they become quieter. And sometimes we feel called to return.

A 21-day practice gives you a simple container for doing exactly that.

Twenty-one days to place your hands on your body.

Twenty-one days to slow down.

Twenty-one days to notice.

Twenty-one days to receive.

Whether you're beginning after an attunement or returning after years away, you don't have to know exactly where the practice will lead.

You only have to begin.

Receive. Listen. Trust.

Your Reiki practice is still here.
