A gentle introduction to balance

What Is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a holistic science of life rooted in the understanding that all living beings are interconnected and guided by natural rhythms. It works on the principle that like attracts like, and balance is restored by introducing opposite or complementary qualities. Rather than treating or suppressing symptoms, Ayurveda identifies the underlying causes of imbalance and supports the body’s natural intelligence through food, lifestyle, sleep, breath, and daily routines.
The Five Great Elements (Panchamahabhutas)
Everything in nature, including the human body and mind, is made from five elements:
Earth
Water
Fire
Air
Ether (Space)
These elements combine to form the three doshas.
Prakruti and Vikruti
Prakruti is your original constitution, the blueprint you were born with.
Vikruti is your current state of imbalance, shaped by lifestyle, stress, and environment.
Ayurveda helps us gently guide the body back toward balance.
The Three Doshas
Vata (Air + Ether): Governs movement, breath, communication, and the nervous system
Pitta (Fire + Water): Governs digestion, metabolism, learning, and transformation
Kapha (Earth + Water): Governs structure, lubrication, immunity, and stability
Dosha Qualities
Vata: light, dry, mobile, subtle
Pitta: hot, sharp, transformative
Kapha: heavy, steady, nourishing
Why Vata Is the Most Important Dosha
Vata is considered the most important dosha because it mobilizes the other two. When vata is disturbed, pitta and kapha can be displaced, leading to deeper imbalance. Supporting vata helps maintain overall stability in the body and mind.
Primary Homes of the Doshas
Vata: colon
Pitta: small intestine
Kapha: stomach
Signs of Balance
Vata: creative, adaptable, inspired
Pitta: focused, clear, effective
Kapha: grounded, calm, compassionate
Common Signs of Imbalance
Vata: anxiety, dryness, irregular digestion
Pitta: irritation, inflammation, overheating
Kapha: heaviness, congestion, low energy
Agni: The Fire of Transformation
Agni is the digestive and metabolic fire that governs how we process food, experiences, and sensory input. Balanced agni supports clarity, energy, and resilience. When agni is weak or overwhelmed, imbalance can develop.
Prana, Tejas, and Ojas
Prana: life force and movement of energy
Tejas: inner fire and intelligence
Ojas: vitality, immunity, and resilience
Living Ayurveda
Ayurveda begins with awareness. By noticing what is present and making small, supportive shifts in daily life, balance can be restored over time.
